New XE Version available with Oracle 18c

Two weeks ago, I was @OOW in San Francisco and had the chance to speak to Gerald Venzl of Oracle. Gerald is responsible for Oracle XE and he confirmed to me that, starting with Oracle 18c, there will always be 3 Oracle Versions available:

  • Oracle Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle Standard Edition
  • Oracle XE

The Oracle XE Edition is completely free and contains more or less all options that are available in EE including Multitenant.

Limits for XE 18c will be 2 GB of memory, 12GB of storage (with basic/advanced compression pushing the real capacity up to around 40GB), 2 CPUs and 4 pluggable databases.

So in my opinion this is absolutely great news, because in the future the developers will be able to work with PDBs on their notebooks!

In our case, we finally get the possibility to deploy the same DB architecture from the notebook up to production level.

Find more information about XE Version here:

All this statements were confirmed by Gerald Venzl.
